During his study, he received an award for best camerawork (film Alphabet directed by M. Kovalenko, 1995).
In 1995 he worked at the Ukrainian studio of chronicle and documentary films, in 1996 he became an operator of Filmotekhnik Company. Serhii became the member of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine in 2000. During the period from 2002 to 2020, he shot a large number of feature films and documentaries: in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Syria, France and the USA, which were awarded at many National and International Film Festivals.
One of the first full-length feature films — Mamai directed by Oles Sanin received both national and international awards, including: Oleksandr Dovzhenko State Award of Ukraine, Knyazhinsky Prize for Best Camerawork at Kinoshok, the XII Open Film Festival of the CIS and Baltic, and A. Moskvin Special Prize of the Jury for Best Camerawork at Literature and Cinema, the X Russian Film Festival. In 2002 he received the award for best camerawork for Lover film directed by Valerii Todorovsky at the 50th San Sebastian'n International Film Festival. The Presidium of the Academy of arts of Ukraine awarded Mikhalchuk the Gold medal for significant creative achievements in 2004. In 2014 the artist was awarded the honorary title “Honored Artist of Ukraine”.
He also received the following awards: 2014 year — Special Diploma of the Jury for camerawork (for the best visual solution) in film The Guide directed by O. Sanin (2014) at Odessa International Film Festival; 2015 year — Silver bear for outstanding contribution to art in Under Electric Clouds film directed by Aleksei German Junior at 65-th Berlin International Film Festival; 2019 year — Golden Dzyga, the National Film Award from the Ukrainian film academy, for the best camerawork in film Wild field directed by Yaroslav Lodyhin.
Among 12 films-contenders for the Oscar Award for Best Foreign Language Film from Ukraine since 1991, four were shot by Serhii Mikhalchuk: Mamai (2001, directed by O. Sanin), Illusion of Fear (2008, directed by Oleksandr Kirienko), Paradjanov (2013, directed by O. Fetisova, S. Avedikyan), The Guide (2014, directed by O. Sanin).
The visual creative activity of Serhii Mikhalchuk is not limited to cinematography. He organized seven personal photo exhibitions in the period from 2000 to 2020.
